The SHE Specialist is required to work with all employees/contractors to manage hazards, implement corrective actions, and prevent accidents and injuries in the workplace. This is achieved through coaching, training and mentoring to achieve understanding and compliance with Nutrien Safety programs, behavioral based safety process, as well as federal and state regulations pertaining to employee/contractor safety and health, and the environment.
What you will do:
- Support the behavioral based safety process by actively participating in meetings, sampling, coaching, and mentoring in the process
- Provide Safety Expertise in all necessary safety reviews and meeting (i.e., Tap Roots, etc.)
- Recommend an alternative or modification to existing safety systems and providing technical advice to personnel for improving the safety of all employees/contractors on site
- Accompany and document OSHA/MSHA inspections, insurance inspections and other formal safety inspections of the site
- Coach employees/contractors to-wards creating a safe work environment for all employees/ contractors by educating all personnel regarding compliance with all applicable safety, health and environmental (SHE) requirements, leading by example, and promoting a positive SHE attitude/culture to all
- Train new employees/contractors and completing follow-up assessments, as well as keeping experienced personnel informed as to safe and efficient methods of performing their assignments
- Provide site-specific MSHA/OSHA compliance training to employees, contractors, and visitors, by meeting the site’s training plan requirements
- Provide training on, MSHA/OSHA auditing, Nutrien Guidance Documents and Tier Standards, Site Specific and Area Specific SOP’s Regulations, etc. This training shall be done on a continuous basis using practical sessions in the field, to ensure understanding and know how
- Coach and mentor employees/contractors on sustainable safe work habits
- Provide management necessary support to assure safety expectations are met
- Instruct on methods of safely performing work
- Assist in technical training programs and implementation of approved safety practices to achieve an efficient and safe operation
- Involvement in new training alignment initiatives as outlined by Corporate. This will be coordinated with the Training Department
- Reinforce employees/contractors to properly plan work following all safe work practices per Nutrien Corporate Policies and Regulations
- Coach Safety Team Leaders Meetings and required safety related training sessions to administer effective sessions--develop and distribute Safety Team Leaders meeting topics, follow proper meeting effectiveness guidelines, objectives and agendas, modifying as appropriate, continuously review and improve training sessions
- Review safety related activities for completeness of required documentation--analyzing safety system data streams including KPS’s incident reports, etc. for continuous improvement, analyzing trends and identifying corrective actions in a timely, tracking (daily) of SHE works orders and providing assistance to get them completed if necessary. Providing feedback to personnel on challenges and completion
- Understand the elements of process safety management (PSM) and using them as best practices to improve our safety systems
- Assist in initial incident investigations and collection of information for ETQ database
- Develop, recommend, and provide changes to safety procedures (i.e. Standard Operating Procedures, site policies)
- Test, investigate, and approve new PPE
- Assist other facilities in safety efforts as needed/directed
- Assist or coordinate Industrial Hygiene activities including audiometric testing, pulmonary and/or fit testing
- Participate on audit teams
- Actively participate in Emergency Management and Crisis Communication Drills
- Active involvement with the emergency response activities on site and throughout Nutrien
- Maintain records for OSHA, MSHA, ETQ, and PSM Contractor Management
- Attend and participate in Contractor meetings
- Conduct presentations and training to ensure compliance
- Field auditing on contractor activities-provide feedback to Contractors and Nutrien Representatives
- Work with contractors to ensure understanding of Nutrien's short- and long-term goals and that their role plays an integral part of the success of reaching these goals
What you will Bring:
- High School Diploma is required. Associate degree or 2-year Technical Degree and higher is preferred
- 5-7 years experience in the petro-chemical indusrty is preferred, others may be considered
- Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) certification is preferred
- Through work experience qualified candidate will be familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a chemical plant
- Possess the ability to lead and influence employees/contractors
- Analytical reading and proficient writing skills
- General business computer application skills required (Microsoft Office, typing, Safety related research)
- Ability to assess safety programs and make recommendations to the Safety Manager for continuous improvement
- Ability to develop working knowledge of Corporate and site safety programs and policies/procedures
- Ability to lead audits and deliver training, as required
- Motivation and ability to obtain Professional Safety Certifications
- Experience with incident investigations is preferred
