This position reports directly to the Superintendent.

 

What you will do:

 

The Sulfuric Acid Chemical Plant Engineer is concerned with the safe, efficient and environmentally sound operation of the sulfuric acid plants at Nutrien, Aurora, NC. Responsibilities of the production engineer encompass process safety management, environmental stewardship, optimization, continuous improvement, project management and operation of sulfuric acid plant, package boiler and turbine generator.

 

  • Ensures environmental compliance of sulfuric acid plants and package boiler with federal, state and local regulations, permits, statues and codes
  • Leads PSM compliance in the sulfuric acid department
  • Responsible for optimizing sulfuric production through process control and efficient operation of the associated equipment in the sulfuric acid area
  • Responsible for optimizing and ensuring the reliable operation of the water treatment plant through process control and efficient operation of the associated equipment in the water treatment plant area
  • Establishes regular presence in plant to become known to operating personnel and familiar with equipment operation and problems
  • Responsible for proper documentation of Management of Change process within the department
  • Ensures that the products and intermediaries manufactured in the sulfuric area are within required chemical specifications for in-plant consumption and are produced at the lowest possible cost, while making sure that neither safety nor the environment is compromised 
  • Tracks and reports downtime which inhibit the efficient operation of the sulfuric plants
  • Leads continuous improvement by addressing downtimes through modifications, the work order system, or by requesting capital funds for improvements
  • Responsible for plant inspections, both external and internal during annual outages
  • Responsible support and oversight of different projects during the annual outages
  • Leads review and updating of Standard Operating Procedures annually
  • Develops and conducts training to communicate changes in operating parameters as well as dealing with newly installed equipment
  • Ensures production tonnage meets or exceeds plan
  • Keeps costs low by improving the reliability of the operating equipment and optimizing the process
  • Ensures that all testing and monitoring for environmental compliance are completed according to schedule
  • Monitors and documents all sulfuric and package boiler emissions data to meet environmental requirements
  • Assists with preparation of department budget and propose, justify and implement capital projects and expenditures
  • Ensures that the appropriate actions are taken to prevent or address environmental non-compliance
  • Requests and applies capital funds to maintain or improve the sulfuric assets efficiencies
  • Participates in monthly crew meetings to improve safety and environmental awareness
  • Troubleshoots operational delays reduce bottlenecks, and identify mechanical problems
  • Coordinates daily production and process trials with other departments
  • Tracks performance and initiate process modifications, as necessary 
  • Prepares appropriate reports, statistics and recommendations on production engineering activities
  • Conducts presentations and meetings with the plant and outside agencies, as required

 

What you will bring:

 

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering is required, Chemical Engineering is preferred
  • Minimum of 5+ years of chemical industry experience
  • Process Safety Management (PSM) experience is preferred 
  • Chemical plant industry, project management and experience with regulatory emission monitoring and control is preferred
  • Knowledge and expertise with computers and various software applications is essential in order to keep up with key operating guidelines for product quality, budget calculations, environmental calculations, and miscellaneous statistical manipulations
  • Supervisory skills are required because the incumbent fills in for the Superintendent and General Supervisor, has weekend duty on a regular basis, and must direct personnel to make changes in operating procedures
  • Project engineering development and management skills 
  • Effective presentation skills is essential 
  • Six sigma training is desired
