This position reports directly to the MHC Port Supervisor.

 

What you will do:

 

The Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, replacing, and performing diagnosis on all of the processing components in and around the Nutrien-operated port facility located in Morehead City, NC. Their duties are accomplished by conducting inspections and performing equipment repairs. These activities are essential to cost-effective operations and require a strict attention-to-detail mindset. Communicating, receiving, and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant sources for conducting repairs is especially important to the daily activities of the Mechanic. Standard Maintenance Procedures, safety, and environmental procedures, work rules, instructions, and daily task assignments are essential to effective performance. The Mechanic will spend approximately 30% of the time monitoring chemical processing equipment and approximately 70% of time will be spent coordinating and conducting repairs.

 

Duties include but are not limited to:

 

  • Perform all work in a safe and controlled manner, adhering to safety and environmental policies
  • Work safely to prevent on-the-job injuries by following Nutrien, Occupational Health Safety Administration, Mining Health Safety Administration, and Marine Security guidelines
  • Uses proper Personal Protection Equipment such as safety glasses, gloves, ear plugs, face shield, flash suits, and personal environmental monitors
  • Work as part of a team to complete assignment and minimize down-time
  • Perform daily maintenance and overhauls on various types of equipment
  • Perform daily and routine preventative maintenance on equipment
  • Repair various other types of static equipment, including heat exchangers, tanks, screws, elevators, and boilers
  • Work as a productive team member and support continuous improvement
  • Cross-training and working in all areas of the facility, as required
  • Perform work from elevated structures, ladders, scissor lifts, boom lifts, personnel-baskets and confined spaces
  • Complete mechanic progression training, as required and within timelines 
  • Follow all safety rules and regulations as set forth by Company
  • Work at heights, outdoors, and around potentially hazardous chemicals
  • Oversee and direct the support personnel’s daily activities, conduct periodic inspections, maintain, and operate equipment and systems in a safe and environmentally responsible manner to always process the highest quality products.
  • Conduct periodic inspections, maintain and operate equipment systems in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.
  • Work safely to prevent on-the-job injuries by following Nutrien, OSHA, MSHA, and MARSEC guidelines.
  • Use proper Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, gloves, ear plugs, face shields, flash suits, and personal environmental monitors in all work performed.
  • Participate in the Nutrien permitting process by properly completing all necessary permits, such as Lockout/Tagout, Hot Work, Confined Space, and Safe Work.
  • Install new parts and production components such as bearings, seals, pumps, motor shafts, rollers, pulleys, and belts.
  • Use hand and power tools to complete job tasks by making the proper selection of a tool to complete assignments.
  • Work as part of a team when completing assignments to minimize downtime.
  • Operate the loading/unloading equipment at the facility:
    • Bucket wheel
    • Drag reclaimer
    • Ship loader
  • Assist in pipe fitting and bolting up flanges by using proper techniques and tools to complete the task.
  • Help tear down and install processing components during an 8-hour shift.
  • Assist in completing hot work permitted tasks by acting as a fire watch, barricading access, fire control, and checking air quality.
  • Collaborate on the completion of confined space permit tasks by setting up ventilation fans, monitor air quality, and performing entrant or attendant duties, as required.
  • Install components such as pumps, compressors, drivers, conveyors, boilers, piping, and valves.
  • Assist with PM tasks during downtime by following PM check sheets and signing off to indicate that you have ensured the tasks have been completed; then provide to the supervisor.
  • Ensure consumable supplies are used most cost-effectively during repair activities.
  • Assist in troubleshooting work-related problems by using established work methods to isolate concerns, and then use proven repair techniques and best practices to complete work tasks.
  • Perform housekeeping duties of an assigned area by cleaning the area before job completion, and turn in completed paperwork indicating the area is clean.
  • Use schematics, diagrams, repair manuals, and blueprints to locate and repair equipment and production components.
  • Assist electricians, welders, and other skilled trades to complete assigned tasks.
  • Assist in the fabrication of metal production components by using a cutting torch and welding equipment.
  • Assist in rigging process components for removal and installation by following proper rigging techniques to complete tasks.
  • Determine the tools necessary to complete daily tasks, follow up on job packages, and review changes with the supervisor.
  • Assist in conducting fixed ladder inspections by using the Fixed Ladder Inspection sheet to verify each ladder component meets standards; report any concerns to the shift supervisor.
  • Conduct daily inspections of mobile equipment by using the mobile equipment checklist.
  • Update job packages by documenting any changes to the job package and reviewing with the supervisor.

 

What you will bring:

 

The National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) testing is required for all hourly applicants of Nutrien. Applicants must complete this test and meet a minimum of 5 in Workplace Documents, 5 on Applied Mathematics and 4 on Graphic Literacy to be considered eligible for employment with Nutrien.

 

  • Curriculum training and on-the-job-training of 3,000 hours & 6,000 to reach Master Craftsman level
  • Possess the initiative to complete the Craft and Progression Plan training by testing for each module in the allotted time frame to ensure steady progression is achieved from Level 8 to Level 13.

 

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent is preferred
  • Proven experience as a Mechanic
  • Relevant vocational training and/or successful completion of apprenticeship as a Mechanic
  • Experience in industrial and/or commercial maintenance setting
  • Thorough knowledge of safety procedures and legal regulations/guidelines
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving abilities

 

 

Compensation & Benefits:

 

Starting rate $30.53 - $43.47 per hour (plus available overtime).

Nutrien offers a skills based pay compensation program.  Hourly rates can progresses based on On-Job-Training, formal learning, and observation of new skills.
