Reporting to the Senior Manager, Rotating Equipment, the Senior Specialist, Rotating Equipment will be a a self-starter with strong decision-making, critical thinking, and communication skills to act as a technical subject matter expert in rotating equipment. The successful candidate for this role will possess excellent attention to detail, high concentration, and the ability to build strong collaborative relationships.

 

What you will do:

  • Model our core value of safety by enabling a culture in which you actively contribute to a safe work environment
  • Monitor rotating equipment incidents at Nutrien to identify trends and put forth proposals to further investigate trends, including development and completion of action plans;
  • Apply specialized subject matter expertise to influence products, service, or processes that impact the whole business unit or across multiple facilities
  • Provide specialized technical support and advice related to rotating equipment for the following:
    • Specification and design
    • Design reviews (specifications, data sheets, drawings, etc.)
    • Quality assurance support for equipment purchase and repair, including review of inspection test plans and witnessing inspection and factory acceptance testing of new equipment (when required)
    • Maintenance (including participation in root cause failure analysis)
    • Outage support for work on critical rotating equipment
    • Repair solutions
    • Troubleshooting and
    • Operation
  • Outage support (e.g., turnaround) includes reviewing and providing feedback on outage plans prior to the outage, and providing expertise in identifying deficiencies and developing repair plans during disassembly of equipment
  • Operational support includes providing assistance on questions regarding the health of the equipment, based on site monitoring activities, and recommending engineering solutions and repair plans to address performance deficiencies
  • Interface with Original Equipment Manufacturer engineers and experts on rotating equipment design, operational deficiencies, in-shop repair plans, and improvements
  • Act as liaison between sites and vendors to escalate issues, particularly when issues are common to multiple sites
  • Contribute to the growth of Nutrien’s rotating equipment mechanical integrity program by leading the development of internal design and in-service equipment practices as follows
    • Identify recognized and generally accepted good engineering practices (RAGAGEP), including standards, codes, best practices, engineering tools, and technology applications, to meet Nutrien’s compliance, safety, and reliability objectives
    • Act as lead author on Nutrien practices which build on the above RAGAGEP, including historizing internal knowledge and experience by collaborating with site rotating equipment expertise
    • Reviewing and providing feedback on practices written by other team members
  • Provide support to implement Nutrien’s rotating equipment mechanical integrity program
  • Contribute to industry knowledge base as Nutrien’s representative on the Process Industry Practices Machinery Function Team (participation in other industry organizations is also encouraged)
  • Teach rotating equipment concepts to junior engineers, process operators, and maintenance technicians
  • Research and stay abreast of new rotating equipment technology and seek opportunities to apply new technology (e.g. energy efficiency)
  • Monitor industry experience and incidents to develop mitigation plans for affected facilities
  • Serve as a “go to person” for less experienced mechanical engineers and maintenance technicians and/or may lead task forces

 

What you will bring:

  • Mechanical Engineering Degree with Professional Engineer designation, or ability to obtain the designation, and 16 years of increasing responsibility with rotating equipment repairs, problem solving (troubleshooting), and equipment selection; or
  • Mechanical Engineering Technology Diploma with Certified Engineering Technologist designation, or equivalent, or ability to obtain the designation, and 20 years of increasing responsibility with rotating equipment repairs, problem solving (troubleshooting), and equipment selection
  • Industrial experience in fertilizer or petrochemical facilities
  • 15+ years of increasing responsibility with rotating equipment repairs, problem solving (troubleshooting), and equipment selection
  • Professional Engineer or Professional Technologist designation is preferred
  • Fundamental understanding of the thermodynamics of compression and expansion cycles in rotating equipment
  • Familiarity with API Standards and Process Industry Practices (PIP) relating to rotating equipment
  • Understanding of vibration analysis and lubrication practices as applied to rotating equipment
  • Familiarity with process safety management
  • Experience or certification in quality control, assurance, and improvement programs is essential; Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) experience or certification is an asset
  • Experience with rotating equipment failures and root cause failure analysis
  • Proficient with use of Microsoft office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Ability to travel to vendor shops and Nutrien facilities worldwide (around 70% of the job is office work with the rest of the time spent visiting Nutrien plant sites and vendor facilities)

 

Compensation & Benefits: 

Salary range for this role is $133,600 - $183,700 per year. This range is estimated for Senior Specialist, Rotating Equipment according to Colorado's Equal Pay for Equal Work Act and Washington's Pay Transparency Law. In addition to base pay, this role is also eligible to participate in our annual incentive plan and long-term incentive plan, consistent with the terms of our program(s) where discretionary pay out of awards is reflecting components such as performance of the company and the employee.  Details will be discussed through the application process.
