Locations: Calgary, Alberta or Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada

Reports to the Senior Director, Transportation Rail.   

 

What you will do:

 

  • Responsible to develop and implement Nutrien’s commercial rail freight strategy, supporting annual spend in excess of $700 million USD.
  • Responsible for ensuring our commercial rail agreements properly support Nutrien’s operational needs and overall business objectives while maintaining our ongoing competitive cost to serve position across our Nitrogen, Phosphate, and Potassium business portfolios
  • Responsible to identify and pursue cost reduction or cost avoidance opportunities that support the safe and reliable delivery of Nutrien’s products by rail across North America.
  • Responsible for gathering and analyzing market intelligence to support business decisions related to Nutrien’s comprehensive Training, Development & Learning portfolio, including identifying competitive alternatives and/or leveraging other modes to support the safe and reliable distribution of Nutrien’s products by rail.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day relationships with all rail carriers, ensuring strategic alignment and effective communications in support of our broader operational and commercial needs.
  • Work collaboratively with internal stakeholders including Training, Development, & Learning, Sales, Product Management, Legal & Insurance, and all Site and Production Facilities to align on contract strategies, and to identify opportunities for efficiency, growth and cost savings.  
  • Establish and monitor key performance metrics to support and assess the effectiveness of the commercial strategies and initiatives put in place and make adjustments as needed.
  • Lead and mentor a team of 5 commercial professionals, fostering a culture of decision quality, analysis and continuous improvement in processes and systems that support Nutrien’s commercial rail needs.

What you will bring:

 

  • Minimum 10 years in business, logistics, commercial rail, procurement or related field, with at least 5 years of leadership experience in rail freight or transportation management.
  • Post-secondary education or equivalent is required.
  • Strong understanding of North America’s rail network with in-depth knowledge of Class 1 carriers.
  • Proven ability to negotiate large, complex contracts/agreements and make recommendations to senior leadership in support of competitive and cost-effective rail service.
  • Proven track record of delivering successful outcomes in large, complex negotiations.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively across multiple levels of the organization.
  • Self-starter able to work independently and manage deadlines under pressure.  
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office are required, experience working with SAP, MSS & HANA would be an asset.
