Reporting to the Assistant General Counsel, M&A and Intellectual Property, the Senior Legal Counsel, Intellectual Property (“IP”) position provides legal advice and support for IP matters across all Nutrien business units. This position works closely with leaders and other stakeholders. It will provide strategic direction to Nutrien’s global IP program and enforcement stewardship as well as day-to-day support in developing, advising, reviewing, drafting, and negotiating all IP matters. This position requires a collaborative approach with stakeholders to identify and manage risk in alignment with Nutrien’s business strategies.
What you will do:
- Comprehensive short and long-term global intellectual property platform and strategy.
- Promote strategic development and maintenance of the patent portfolio worldwide.
- Provide strategic counseling and work with outside counsel on all facets of intellectual property law including policies and practices, applications and registrations, risk assessments, and business development transactions.
- Review, draft, and negotiate intellectual property-related agreements including research and development, collaboration, confidentiality, material transfer, license agreements, and the intellectual property provisions of other contractual documents (e.g. manufacturing, packaging, supply, and master service agreements).
- Provide intellectual property support for a range of strategic transactions, including conducting or coordinating due diligence.
- Manage invention disclosures and portfolios including collecting and screening disclosures, conducting inventor interviews, and presenting disclosures at team meetings.
- Review Nutrien’s public presentations, scientific publications, marketing materials, and other public disclosures for intellectual property compliance or concerns.
- Review, advise, and deploy training on emerging industry trends and legal developments to further Nutrien’s compliance, best practices, and risk management in the area of intellectual property.
- Assign and manage the engagement of external counsel, as required.
- Support the legal department on other initiatives, as required.
- Comply with all Nutrien’s standards, policies, and procedures, including but not limited to the Nutrien code of conduct, respect in the workplace policies, safety, health and environment policies and other applicable policies and practices as implemented or amended.
What you will bring:
- The position requires an individual with a Law Degree (LLB/JD) and a practicing member in good standing with the Law Society of Saskatchewan, Alberta, Colorado, or Illinois.
- Approximately 10-15 years of experience at a leading law firm or as in-house counsel with a focus on an intellectual property portfolio and related workstreams, with particular consideration to a candidate’s experience stewarding strategic initiatives.
- Ability to effectively collaborate with stakeholders, identify risks and provide practical advice and potential solutions that demonstrate an understanding of overall business objectives, risks and opportunities.
- A strategic mindset connecting tailored advice to both broad and specific organizational goals.
- Keen analytic and problem-solving skills with demonstrated ability to understand the broader economic, strategic, and operational issues affecting the business.
- Excellent relationship-building and interpersonal skills, based on a foundation of integrity.
- Ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment, manage a broad range of daily interactions and address unexpected projects with condensed timelines.
- Demonstrated good judgment in working with stakeholders, occasionally under ambiguous or challenging circumstances.
- Demonstrated focus on continuous improvement individually and within the team.
- Solid work ethic with the ability to take initiative.
Compensation & Benefits:
Salary Range $177,600- $329,700 annually. This range is estimated for Sr. Legal Counsel, Intellectual Property role located in Loveland, CO.
Salary Range $169,100 - $314,000 annually. This range is estimated for Sr. Legal Counsel, Intellectual Property role located in Chicago, IL. Actual salary and benefits may differ based upon location.

In addition to base pay, this role is also eligible to participate in our annual incentive plan and long-term incentive plan, consistent with the terms of our program(s) where discretionary pay out of awards is reflecting components such as performance of the company and the employee.
