The Senior Manager, Up & Midstream Communications and Business Partnering, is a strategic, relationship-driven leader with a proven track record of partnering with senior operational and functional leaders to translate business priorities into high-impact communications. In this role, you will set a new, consistent business partnering model and deliver a suite of enhanced communications consulting and execution services across our Upstream (Potash, Nitrogen, Phosphate) and Midstream operating segments, as well as our corporate functions, spanning Canada and the U.S. You will also leverage your Incident Command System training and experience to strengthen site-level issue management, crisis preparedness, and response.

Reporting to the Director, Communications, Operating Segments, you will lead a team of senior level communicators, ensuring operational communications strategies are closely aligned with business objectives. You will work closely with operational leaders, site general managers, corporate functions, and the broader Global Communications team to develop and execute annual communications plans that encompass leader messaging, employee engagement, and community outreach.

This is a high-impact role where strategic communications directly support operational goals and drive measurable business outcomes for Nutrien’s upstream and midstream segments. Success in this role means enabling leaders to engage employees, reinforce safety and operational excellence, and strengthen the connection between strategic priorities and daily operations.

What you will do:

  • Serve as the primary strategic communications partner to operating segments and key corporate functions, ensuring communications are tightly aligned with operational objectives, stakeholder engagement priorities, and Nutrien’s global narratives.
  • Lead and mentor a team of Advisors, fostering high performance and consistency in the development and execution of annual communications plans across upstream and midstream segments.
  • Partner with operational leaders and corporate functions—including External Affairs, Community Investment, Indigenous Relations, HR, IT and Safety—to design integrated, proactive communications strategies that advance business and community objectives.
  • Oversee operational issues and crisis communications in partnership with Operations using the Incident Command System (ICS), ensuring timely, effective, and coordinated responses that protect people, assets, and reputation.
  • Plan and execute large-format employee communications events, including town halls and department/segment-wide updates, in collaboration with the Global Communications team, to engage and align employees with business priorities.
  • Guide the development of local media briefs, public engagement strategies, and proactive media relations activities, ensuring clear, consistent messaging across Upstream and Midstream segments.
  • Transform technical, operational, and community-focused information into compelling narratives for internal and external audiences, reinforcing safety, operational excellence, and community impact.
  • Lead Nutrien’s global internal editorial strategy, leveraging owned channels—including Geo, digital site screens, and social media—to maximize reach and impact.
  • Oversee communications materials for operational events, leader speaking opportunities, and community and Indigenous engagement initiatives, ensuring quality, consistency, and strategic impact.
  • Lead the development, measurement, and analysis of communications performance metrics, using insights to drive continuous improvement and operational excellence.
  • Provide strategic oversight for on-site communications activities—including filming, photography, and media tours—across North American facilities to ensure professional, high-impact execution.

What you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, Business, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum 15 years of progressive experience in strategic communications, stakeholder engagement, or corporate affairs, including within a global, publicly traded organization.
  • Proven leadership experience managing high-performing operational communications teams.
  • Strong understanding of integrated communications strategy, crisis communications, and stakeholder engagement in complex, operational and corporate environments.
  • Experience working in diverse industries (industrial, resources and consumer facing), with a demonstrated ability to translate technical and operational insights into compelling narratives.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills across multiple formats and audiences—including executive communications, employee engagement, and external media.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain trusted relationships with senior leaders, SMEs, and cross-functional teams.
  • Strong analytical mindset with experience developing and interpreting performance metrics to inform strategy and drive continuous improvement.
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity and making independent decisions while fostering collaboration across diverse teams.
  • Deep curiosity and commitment to understanding Nutrien’s full value chain.
