The Carseland Nitrogen Operation is located about 50 km east of Calgary and employs approximately 170 people.  It is registered with ABSA as a First Class Plant and allows Power Engineers exposure to multiple processes such as steam/gas reforming, amine scrubbing for Carbon Dioxide removal, high pressure compression and catalytic conversion in the production of Anhydrous Ammonia.  CO2 and NH3 are used in a high pressure process to produce solid product urea which can be used to produce timed release coated urea (ESN).

 

The successful candidate for this role will be a highly adaptable professional with strong organizational, interpersonal, communication, coaching, and team skills, supported by a solid understanding of change management principles. Demonstrates ownership and accountability for safe, reliable, and efficient operations, with intermediate proficiency in MS Office, SAP, and other operational systems. Able to remain calm and maintain a strategic perspective under high‑pressure conditions, skilled in problem resolution using both standard and innovative approaches, and experienced in coaching and developing new personnel. Possesses the ability to quickly gain a comprehensive understanding of CNO’s maintenance practices and processes.

What You'll Do:

    • Leading, coaching and developing an operating team of up to 14 operators to ensure their work is focused on corporate and department objectives 
    • Managing all aspects of people and performance management for the operating team, including coaching, mentoring, performance reviews, progressive discipline, documenting performance, and supporting operators in their development while ensuring individual and team performance expectations are met.
    • Ensuring the operating team is fully trained, knowledgeable, and competent in all required tasks, while identifying development needs and taking action to maintain a high level of skill and capability across the team.
    • Leading safety performance for the team by conducting regular field audits, procedure compliance checks, and safety observations, and ensuring timely follow-up on identified gaps.
    • Working collaboratively with the other supervisors to establish consistency across the teams and across the plant and acting as a key interface between the operating team, other teams, maintenance and departments across the site.
    • Managing and coordinating the shift-to-shift operations of the ammonia, urea, ESN and TCE cogeneration plants
    • Ensuring the team understands their work and manages it in a way that optimizes plant performance against key performance indicators, while setting clear daily expectations and holding operators accountable to safety, quality, and operational standards through coaching and corrective action when required.
    • Assist with troubleshooting operational issues within the units
    • Provide coverage for other supervisors as required and assist with planned and unplanned outages and turnarounds
    • Ensuring consistent application of site policies, operating procedures, and performance expectations, and maintaining accurate documentation related to employee performance and conduct.
    • Acting as a safety leader and subject matter expert by reinforcing Life Critical requirements, risk assessments, and safe work practices, and stopping or correcting unsafe work when observed.

 

What You'll Bring:

  • Minimum 2nd Class Power Engineering Certificate (Alberta or Interprovincial). Candidates with a 3rd Class Certificate demonstrated increasing responsibility, and previous supervisory experience in a large industrial complex will be considered, provided they commit to obtaining their 2nd Class Certificate within an agreed-upon timeframe.
  • 5+ years operating experience in both field and panel positions (preferred)
  • Proven supervisory skills and demonstrated leadership ability, including effective performance management, coaching and developing employees, and confidently conducting difficult conversations.
