Reporting to the Senior Manager, Process Engineering, the Process Engineering Co-op will support the rapidly developing Nitrogen Real-time Operations Center (“NROC”) which is a centralized group of technical subject matter experts using advanced technologies to assist Nutrien’s 10 Nitrogen fertilizer facilities located in Canada, the US and Trinidad. They will contribute to the development, utilization, and sustainability of Ammonia plant digital twins (process models) along with other advanced monitoring and predictive technologies.

 

This position will be based at Nutrien’s Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta site and is not eligible for remote work.

 

What you will do:

  • Identify plant operating data required for centralized plant monitoring and map them to an asset data structure.
  • Develop visualization and analysis applications for centralized plant monitoring.
  • Perform simulations using digital twins to identify opportunities for plant optimization and capital upgrades.
  • Report and analyze results from digital twin simulations.
  • Collaborate with engineering and operations personnel to troubleshoot plant issues.

 

What you will bring:

  • Currently enrolled and completed at least 2 years of an undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering (or equivalent) required
  • Experience with reading and analyzing Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) required
  • Experience with Nitrogen fertilizer processes (Ammonia, Urea, Nitric Acid) preferred
  • Experience with process simulation software, such as UniSim Design or Aspen HYSYS preferred
  • Knowledge required
    • Developing knowledge of chemical engineering principles, including thermodynamics, reaction kinetics, heat transfer, compression, refrigeration, and fluid dynamics
    • Basic understanding of computer programming and data analysis
  • Skills required
    • Use of chemical process simulation software
    • Use of Microsoft Excel, including macros
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Abilities required
    • Work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders
    • Communicate effectively and influence others
    • Passion for digital technologies
