This position reports to the Director of Technology & Innovation and will be located onsite in Loveland, Colorado working in the Nitrogen Real-time Operations Center (NROC) working collaboratively with 10 Nitrogen facilities across North America and Trinidad to achieve optimization and reliability in the water treatment process.

 

What you will do:

  • Develop and execute a value-driven, real-time monitoring and optimization program for water treatment and utilities for 10 Nitrogen facilities across North America and Trinidad using available data from process control systems, field readings, lab analyses, simulation results, and other available datasets
  • Identify and recommend opportunities for water treatment (including pre-treatment, cooling water, boiler water and wastewater) optimization (typically, tighter/ improved control, additional sensors/measurements, alternative treatment tactics, or alternative control)
  • Engage plant and central engineering personnel on water treatment troubleshooting and identification of long-term trends, deviation, and equipment degradation
  • Develop relationships and collaboration practices with plant personnel and other Nutrien specialists
  • Develop a collaborative solution with water treatment vendors to ensure best water chemistry is achieved at all times and reduction in equipment performance is minimized between turnarounds
  • Work with other NROC specialists to develop and improve condition-based monitoring algorithms, including new technology to monitor corrosion online, deposition and microbiological (beyond what is typically recommended by water treatment providers
  • Work with other NROC specialists to troubleshoot problems to provide valuable engineering and chemistry perspectives and analysis
  • Work with analytics and other technology professionals to evaluate, implement, and optimize advanced monitoring algorithms
  • Work with production sites to take a data driven approach to developing turnaround scope and support turnaround inspection to ensure water treatment programs have performed per design
  • Identify areas of repeat failure and engage stakeholders to complete root cause failure analysis
  • Manage collection, analysis, and interpretation of data related to water treatment processes 
  • Stay up-to-date with new technologies and trends in data monitoring and water treatment

 

What you will bring:

  • Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, advanced Power Engineering, or other related designation
  • 10+ years of experience with water treatment in world scale chemical plant with high pressure steam system (1500+ psig).
  • Experience with ammonia, hydrogen, ethylene, and/or methanol plants is preferred
  • Experience with water-treatment specific modelling software, such as French Creek modelling preferred
  • Experience with real-time systems, such as AVEVA Unified Operations Center/System Platform/Wonderware, and OSI PI preferred
  • Proficient user of Microsoft 365 suite programs
  • Experience with root cause failure analysis
  • Knowledge and understanding in the following will be considered an asset:
    • Safety, reliability, and efficiency concepts as they relate to large chemical plants
    • Corrosion/scale-forming mechanisms and metallurgy in steam systems up to 1800 psig
    • Water chemistry related to raw water, boiler feedwater, cooling water, and waste water
    • Industrial water treatment theory and commonly engineered solutions

 

Compensation & Benefits:

 

Salary Range is $112,800 - $155,100 This range is estimated for Senior Engineer, NROC Water Treatment & Utilities. Actual salary and benefits may differ based upon location.

In addition to base pay, this role is also eligible to participate in our annual incentive plan and long-term incentive plan, consistent with the terms of our plan(s), which provide discretionary award opportunities reflecting components such as performance of the company and the employee.  Details will be discussed through the application process.
