Legal Counsel, Upstream

This position is required to be on-site (five days a week) and is located in Saskatoon, SK.

Reports to Senior Counsel, Upstream.
What you will do:
- Provide legal support to the Upstream operating segment, including Potash and Nitrogen production sites on a wide variety of matters, including: procurement of goods and services, mining, and construction and occupational health and safety, pre-litigation resolution of contract disputes, access to information requests, real estate, and environment - in alignment with Nutrien’s business needs
- Work closely with procurement, operations, and other stakeholders including other segments of the legal department
- Provide day-to-day legal advice in support of operational segment involving mining and chemical manufacturing to produce agricultural inputs
- Draft and negotiate a variety of contracts, including supply chain contracts and construction contracts
- Provide legal support on strategic business objectives and initiatives in the Upstream operating segment
- Provide legal support to operations on regulatory matters, including safety, health and environmental matters
- Support real estate transactions in the Upstream operating segment
- Assist in retaining and managing external counsel as necessary
- Comply with all Company standards, policies and procedures pertaining to appropriate conduct for employees, including the Statement of Core Values and Code of Business Conduct; the Respect in the Workplace Policy; Safety, Health and Environment Policies; and any other applicable standards, policies and procedures as implemented and/or revised by the Company or by legislation
What you will bring:
- A law degree, and be a member in good standing with the Law Society of Saskatchewan and Alberta
- Must have:

- license to work in Saskatchewan or Alberta (and obtain dual licensing to work in both); or
- dual license to work in Saskatchewan and Alberta
- 5-8 years of post-bar call legal experience in private practice or in-house (in-house experience is preferred)
- Excellent communication and drafting skills
- Experience in supply chain matters and with agriculture, mining or heavy industry would be an asset
- Experience in providing legal advice on safety, health and environmental matters would be an asset
- Experience in resolving pre-litigation contract disputes, and real estate matters would be an asset
- Ability to collaborate with a variety of people, job functions and business segments within the organization, and externally advance business goals
- Ability to identify legal risks and provide risk adjusted advice
- Willingness to learn and understand strategic and operational aspects of the business, and adapt in a dynamic business environment.
- Ability to handle multiple and varied legal projects with competing deadlines
- Having an ‘owners mindset” and willingness to take initiative
- Excellent judgment and people skills
- Willingness to engage in travel
