Reporting to the Lead Molecular Biologist, this position is responsible for providing high throughput genotyping services which includes both the development and utilization of genotyping platforms to generate data supporting crop improvement for multiple breeding programs at Nutrien.

 

What you will do:
 

  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to the SH&E Safety program by assisting Lead Molecular Biologist and other team members in maintaining safety compliance as per Nutrien Ag Solutions SH&E policies. Follow safety policies, protocols, and procedures, and ensure a safe working environment for all team members.

  • Use standardized operating procedures to ensure that all material necessary for DNA extractions and genotyping services is prepared properly and on time.

  • Work with the team to plan and organize weekly workflow efficiently to ensure completion of samples according to deadline. Seeks to understand sample priorities and makes good time management decisions.

  • Complete weekly genotyping activities including DNA extractions, buffer/reagent preparation, PCR set up, PCR and analysis.

  • Operate and maintain all lab automation equipment in support of genotyping activities.

  • Troubleshoot and solve problems associated with equipment.

  • Maintain proper records for lab process, instruments performance, documenting problem areas and communicate effectively with team members and manager.

  • Perform essential duties such as cleaning, organizing lab supplies, and executing equipment maintenance procedures.

  • Operate software programs such as MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Utilize LIMS and genotyping database.

  • Promote sharing of information and a team-oriented spirit of collaboration.

  • Cross-functional collaboration by helping other groups including the DH, Growth Facilities and chemistry lab may be required from time to time as workload enables.

  • Conduct research initiatives as assigned. This includes gathering relevant information from various sources, analyzing data, and compiling findings into reports or presentations.

What you will bring:
 

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Plant Sciences or Molecular Biology, Biotechnology or related field is an asset but not required.

  • 3 years of previous work experience in a molecular lab setting, ideally a high throughput genotyping lab with automation.

  • Strong interpersonal effectiveness and personal leadership skills.

  • Experience in automation systems for liquid handling and extraction processes preferred.

  • Experience with real-time and end point PCR interpretation.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

  • Experience with databases and LIMS.

  • Attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment – Excellent communication, exchanging ideas with colleagues, sharing the workload, and interacting with supervisors.
