This position reports to the General Manager

 

The SHE Specialist collaborates daily with all site employees and contractors to identify and mitigate hazards and implements corrective actions to prevent incidents and injuries in the workplace. This is achieved through in-field coaching, frequent safety training sessions and regular mentoring to ensure understanding and compliance with all Nutrien Safety programs and policies, as well as all federal, state, and local safety and health, and the environment regulations.

 

What you will do:

 

  • Spend 50-75% of time in the field coaching, mentoring, and guiding all employees/contractors through safe work practices while identifying potential safety hazards.
  • Participate and assist in managing the site’s hazard identification program, lead site incident investigations and corrective actions, conduct routine Key Procedure Audits, perform organization Inspections, etc.
  • Develop, lead and support actions which contribute to Nutrien’ s “Home Safe Everyday” philosophy.
  • Provide hands-on technical SHE expertise related to culture, internal standard, compliance, and industry best practices.
  • Make recommendations addressing identified issues, improving SH E management as well as risk minimization.
  • Provide safety expertise in all necessary safety reviews and meetings (i.e., Tap Roots, Corporate SHE Audits, etc.)
  • Represent Nutrien with outside entities such as regulatory agencies and consultants. (i.e., OSHA inspections, insurance inspections, etc.)
  • Support and lead the behavioral based safety process by actively participating in meetings, sampling, coaching, and mentoring of site team members.
  • Provide guidance on current and new regulatory expectations.
  • Provide new hire/new contractor orientation and conduct follow-up competency evaluations and assessments.
  • Communicate new safe and efficient methods of performing job assignments and needed refresher specific job task safety training.
  • Provide all required site-specific OSHA compliance training and refresher training to employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Provide all site training required by the site’s training plan (i.e., OSHA auditing, Nutrien Guidance Documents and Tier Standards, Site Specific and Area Specific SOP’s, PSM, etc.) Conduct competency evaluations on provided training.
  • Provide SHE support to site administration to ensure goals/targets are achieved.
  • Participate in new training alignment initiatives as outlined by Corporate. This will be coordinated with the Training Department.
  • Analyze safety system data streams including SOP’s, etc. for continuous improvement.
  • Analyze SHE trends and identifying corrective actions.
  • Track SHE work orders to completion and aid with completion when needed. Provide feedback to personnel when completion challenges arise.
  • Understand the elements of process safety management (PSM) and use them as best practices to improve site safety systems.
  • Lead incident investigations, assemble investigation team
  • Test, investigate, and approve new site PPE.
  • Assist other facilities in safety efforts as needed/directed.
  • Assist in coordinating industrial hygiene activities including audiometric testing.
  • Participate on audit teams when needed.
  • Actively participate in Emergency Management and Crisis Communication Drills
  • Active involvement with the emergency response activities on site and throughout Nutrien.
  • Maintain records for OSHA, ETQ, and PSM, and PSM Contractor Management
  • Lead contractor safety meetings.
  • Conduct in-field auditing on contractor activities providing feedback to contractors and Nutrien representatives.
  • Work with contractors to ensure understanding of Nutrien’s safety expectations and responsibilities.
  • Communicate to contractors that their role plays an integral part of the success of reaching these goals.
  • Obtain Professional Safety Certifications

 

What you will bring:

 

  • Associates/Bachelor’s degree preferred
    • Occupational Health and Safety Degree will be considered in lue of experience. 
  • 3-5 years Chemical Manufacturing or related field experience, required
  • Possess the ability to lead and guide employees/contractors
  • Critical thinking reading and proficient writing skills
  • General business computer application skills required (Microsoft Office, typing, Safety related research)
  • Ability to assess safety programs and make recommendations to the Plant Manager for continuous improvement
  • Ability to develop working knowledge of Corporate and site safety programs and policies/procedures
  • Ability to lead audits and deliver training as required
  • Preferred to have OSHA Certification (30 hour OSHA, 40 hour OSHA, OSHA trainer, HAZWOPER)
  • Experience with incident investigations is preferred
