Reporting to the General Manager, the Manager Safety & Health is responsible for the overall effective management of the Safety Department, Security Department, PSM Program oversite and the Training Department, providing leadership on and directing the overall safety and security strategy for the site. The Manager Safety & Health is responsible for the Safety Department personnel; safety coordination; risk assessments and safety audits; safety training; safety policies, procedures, and manuals; and safety reporting. The Manager Safety & Health manages the site safety procedures and systems along with safety statistics reporting to ensure compliance with OSHA/MSHA standards and Nutrien Guidance Documents. 

 

What you will do:

  • Direct, plan, implement, promote, and control safety related activities. 
  • Provide day-to-day direction and supervision to the Safety department personnel to meet site safety objectives.
  • Recommend to site senior management overall safety goals and objectives for the site to help maintain a safe workplace through continuous improvement.
  • Manage the site safety rules and procedures manual and facilitate review to keep procedures current and effective.
  • Promote, monitor, and report on compliance with all elements of Corporate Safety, Health, Environment (SHE) programs, including planned inspections, job observations, safety meetings, toolbox meetings, accident/incident investigation recommendations, Apollo RCA investigations, incident reporting, etc.
  • Conduct risk assessments and ensure procedures are developed and maintained, and training and equipment is in place to respond to all foreseeable emergencies on site.
  • Manage the incident and near miss investigations, corrective actions and classification of incidents using the corporate database (ETQ).
  • Investigate serious and hi-potential incidents using Apollo RCA incident analysis and reporting software.  Maintain a pool of trained Apollo RCA facilitators.
  • Compile, analyze and report to site on safety data streams and trends to influence change and improve safety performance.
  • Review and approve SDS for controlled products.
  • Oversee safety inspections, compliance audits and hazard recognition programs to meet site safety objectives
  • Oversee orientations for new hires and service providers regarding site safety responsibility and accountability.
  • Oversee the operation of the site’s emergency and health clinic consisting of one Contract Doctor and one Nutrien Paramedic.
  • Provide day-to-day direction and supervision to the Security department personnel and contractors to meet site security objectives.
  • Provide day-to-day direction and supervision to the Training department personnel to meet corporate and site training objectives.
  • Monitor health of site’s entire safety program and recommend to management where remedial action is necessary to maintain standards. Explore where site’s safety programs, policies, and procedures can be improved or expanded.
  • Monitor the progress and compliance of the site’s Process Safety Management plan and work with the PSM Technician to recommend to management where remedial action is necessary to maintain OSHA and Company standards for the program.
  • Review safety training material and support front line management in delivering safety training to ensure that employees are properly trained to safely perform assigned tasks.
  • Assist departments in providing training and coaching to front line management and other employees as required on elements of the Safety programs (i.e. job observations, accident incident investigations, planned inspections, etc.).
  • Provide support/training to management in safety program requirements (WSA safety program requirements, corporate guidance documents, etc).
  • Provide assistance to all departments to ensure that all applicable and relevant legislative requirements are being met, e.g., MSHA and OSHA.
  • Ensure emergency response program is fully supported and training standards are maintained or improved. Coordinate or participate in emergency response drills.

 

What you will bring:

 

  • Professional /academic qualifications in any of the following: business administration, engineering, science, occupational / industrial safety & health or risk management. 
  • At least 7 years of safety experience in an industrial environment, preferably with supervisory responsibility.
  • Trained in Process Safety Management Compliance from an accredited and approved institution. 
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge and understands the application of Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) regulations, including the classification of occupational injuries and illnesses and management of safety statistics.  Familiar with and demonstrates knowledge in the external regulations and standards such as NFPA, OSHA, MSHA, FRA, and ANSI.
